Reality/Emulation

by Donna L. Lish

What is the actual essence of anything if not a set of perceptible properties? An observer validates that which is viewed. As one investigator who delves into the realms of consciousness, I have explored and implemented a coalescence of my mental and emotional domains with the physical manifestations inherent in art making.

I regard my process as an emergency from my senses to decipher what is abstract; that which is concealed in my cumulative intellect, my ultimate construct. In my vision, there is distinction between 'what it looks like and what truthfully is'.

As an observer I am immersed in visual cues which impart what follows. My means is through stitches- knitted and crocheted- as each stitch, in its script-like looping, enhances the composite of my complex repertoire. My sculptures are artifacts of an incessant drifting of emotions liberated from constraints of my life. There is fragile illumination; therapeutic rhythm.

My perspective of reality is a language, a script- on some earthly plane, decoded or not. I continue to be the unrelenting witness, contending with the tension between what is and what is actually seen in the mirror of my intimate vision.

The act of counting is inherent in knitting, crocheting, and beading: threads per ply, stitches or beads per row, rows per inch. Double and triple crochet produce open spaces in a fabric. Single crochet and stockinette are samples of tighter interlacing and can be altered with the thickness of thread, size of needle or hook.

My explorations integrate all the variables while I calculate and count out progress in my own pulse of accuracy. Process is intuitive, experiential, yet deviant from preconceived anticipations.

I consider the spirit of a book, the essence of a container—functional purpose subsumed by intellectual impression. A book is the splay of pages, the drape from a binding, the script-like looping of stitches. A container is in keeping—an idea, wish, history, confession. Making objects records a presence through time that defines and tethers me.
